Celebrating the women of our world
Inspired by the legendary Phuket Heroines, Thao Thep Krasattri and Thao Si Sunthon, Lan Na Biophilia champions the everyday celebration of women's resilience and leadership. Their valiant 1785 defense against Burmese forces exemplifies the enduring spirit and ingenuity of women, a legacy that guides our ethos.

Lan Na Biophilia is profoundly inspired by the historic valor of the Phuket Heroines, Thao Thep Krasattri and Thao Si Sunthon (Lady Chan and Lady Mook), whose audacious defense against the Burmese invasion in 1785 serves as a testament to female courage and leadership. Their strategic brilliance in rallying islanders to protect Thalang Fort is not merely a tale of heroism but a legacy that illuminates the enduring strength and resilience of women.
During the Burmese siege of Thalang, the heroines devised an ingenious plan to disguise local women as male soldiers, increasing the perceived size of their force. With just a few hundred trained soldiers among approximately 2,000 men, this clever ruse, combined with their effective use of the fort’s cannons and muskets, helped to sustain the fort through weeks of siege. Despite the Burmese forces numbering about 3,000, their lack of sufficient artillery and the resolve of Thalang's defenders forced them to retreat after 25 days, suffering 300-400 casualties. This decisive victory preserved the independence of their community and embedded their story deeply into Thai cultural heritage.
Reflecting on International Women's Month, which we honored last month, it's important to reiterate our belief at Lan Na Biophilia that celebrating and respecting women transcends a designated day or month. It's a commitment woven into the fabric of our daily practices and organizational ethos. The heroines' embodiment of leadership, ingenuity, and determination resonates with our core values, reminding us of the indispensable role women play in nurturing and leading communities.
